This week, a patient who had seen a sign in our office that we officer sedation dentistry, ask me what this was. I was so surprised by the question, that at first I thought that he was kidding, but then I realized, that like so many professionals, we had become lost in our own little world of dental terminology, that we forgot that regular people don’t know our professional vocabulary! Let me explain what sedation dentistry is, and why it is so valuable

Why Sedation

Let’s face it, Having a dentist with their hand in your mouth for even few minutes is not the most pleasant experience on earth.  In fact, for some people who have had a bad experience, it can be downright terrifying!  With sedation dentistry or sleep dentistry as is often called, the patients are so relaxed they don’t care about the procedures and often don’t remember anything about it, or they sleep through the whole procedure and wake up to their newly cleaned or restored mouths.  No bad experiences.  This is great not only for people who are terrified of the dentist but for anyone at all who would rather sleep during their dental therapy.

Levels of Sedation

There are different levels of sedation ranging from light (which can be easily accomplished with laughing gas or nitrous oxide gas to use the professional terminology, to deep sedation which is like being asleep.  These different levels of sedation are obtained by different means or drugs. I our office we offer all levels of sedation ranging from light which can be obtained with some pills or laughing gas, to moderate or conscious sedation which is achieved with an intravenous medication with a registered nurse monitoring the patient’s or even deep sedation which is administered by  a trained and licensed anaesthetist. So if you think that sedation dentistry might be right for you, give us call.  We promise to make your dental experience as pleasant as possible.
